Cairns is a pretty nice town. It's heavily touristed with the Great Barrier Reef on it's doorstep and rainforests in the other direction. But it's managed not to be touristy in a tacky way. They have plenty of souvenier shops but on the whole have some pretty good stuff in them. There's a night market which reminded us of the markets in South East Asia (without the hard sell).
There are signs on the esplanade that warn you to be careful of the saltwater crocs. We didn't get close enough to worry.
The place we were staying at is run by a couple from Brighton. Small world.
We visited the Reef Dome on top of the casino and saw a huge crocodile, some beautiful native birds and some really cute koalas. Liam had his picture taken with one called Harvey.
